We’ll meet for about an hour and a half to discuss what the United Methodist Church and Catalina are as well as have an opportunity to ask questions and get to know one another a bit. Pastor Kelli Meets Pima County Interfaith Council

Many of you know that prior to ministry, I was a faith-based community organizer. For those that may be unfamiliar with the work, a faith-based community organizer builds relationships with clergy, congregations, and local leaders to foster social justice, civic engagement, and community empowerment through the lens of faith. So when I learned that Tucson has at least one faith-based community organizing organization—Pima County Interfaith Council (PCI)—I was excited to meet with one of their local organizers to learn more about their work.
I met with Monique Velasquez who has been with PCI as an organizer for about the last year. Monique spent the last several years in Texas organizing mobile home residents and moved back to her hometown in Tucson about a year ago. She shared that she met with some leaders from Catalina UMC and believes we may have been members of PCI at some point, but the two of us weren’t quite able to piece together the shared history (so if anyone reading this knows, feel free to share!).
I had the opportunity to learn about PCI’s inspiring efforts to foster unity and leadership within Tucson's faith communities. Monique is actively working to convene a diverse group of clergy members committed to strengthening interfaith relationships and enhancing community engagement across the city.
In addition to her work with clergy, Monique is working to bring together of a leadership table for lay members as well. This initiative aims to provide a platform for laity to engage in meaningful relationship-building and to receive leadership training, empowering them to take active roles in their communities.
One of the standout projects Monique is involved in is the Parish ID program, an initiative of the Pima County Interfaith Council (PCI). This program issues non-governmental identification cards to parishioners who lack official documentation, offering them a sense of belonging and a means to identify themselves. The Tucson Police Department and the Pima County Sheriff's Department have recognized these Parish IDs as acceptable forms of identification, encouraging holders to report crimes and cooperate with law enforcement without fear. To date, PCI has issued approximately 350 Parish IDs in Tucson, significantly enhancing trust and collaboration between law enforcement and immigrant communities.
Monique's unwavering commitment to uniting faith leaders and empowering community members exemplifies the impactful work being done to strengthen Tucson's social fabric. Her work is inspiring and I’m happy to share upcoming events for those who may be looking to connect more with this important work at this critical time in our city.
