CUMC Recognizes and Celebrates:

From CUMC’s Multicultural Committee
Cord Jefferson, who grew up in Tucson and is a Canyon Del Oro High School grad, wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated movie, American Fiction (as reported in the Daily Star). Its five Oscar nods include “Best Adapted Screenplay.” Jefferson, who is 41, worked as a journalist and editor after college, then began writing for TV in 2015, earning a Primetime Emmy in 2019. (Incidentally, the film includes a number of references to Tucson, including local bands of his youth.)
Mr. Jefferson’s achievements exemplify the theme of this year’s Black History Month, "African Americans and the Arts.” They are but one illustration of the impact that Black individuals have on our history and culture. This month should bring our focus to other such individuals and what their accomplishments should mean to us. More broadly, the month aims to serve as a platform for learning about, reflecting on and celebrating the heritage, accomplishments, and experiences of Black Americans. We hope you will take the time to explore those things.

The United Nations established February 20th in 2007 as World Day of Social Justice, recognizing the need to promote social justice, which includes efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, unemployment, human rights, and social protections. While primarily focused on governmental and agency roles and activities, it should also remind us of the needs our own communities should be trying to address more locally.
