October Observance of Multicultural Interest from CUMC's Multicultural Committee
LGBTQ+ History Month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson.
This year's theme is Medicine: #UnderTheScope, celebrating and remembering the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans people in the fields of medicine and healthcare.
Since its inception, LGBTQ+ History Month has become a vital observance across the globe. It coincides with National Coming Out Day on October 11 and weaves together a tapestry of stories that remind us of the courage, love, and resilience that define the LGBTQ+ experience. It teaches us about the influential figures and pivotal events that have advanced LGBTQ+ rights. From the Stonewall Riots in 1969, which sparked the modern gay rights movement, to the ongoing battles for justice and equality, this month encourages us to learn from the past and continue pushing for a future where everyone can live openly and proudly.

Hurricane Disaster Relief
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, UMCOR was able to provide critical relief to devastated areas across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, offering hope and support as communities began the long process of recovery. Thanks to the generosity of donors, we were able to bolster essential efforts to deliver food, clean water, and begin initial clean up. Here is a short video that shows early relief efforts.
Now, as Hurricane Milton has made landfall, UMCOR is preparing once again to respond to this new crisis. Your gift today will help us continue to provide life-saving aid, offering immediate relief and supporting the recovery of families and communities impacted by this latest disaster.

Brooks-Howell Home Damage
Asheville is home to Brooks-Howell Home (BHH Project #0731100), a continuing care retirement home located on a 10-acre site near downtown Asheville. It is a not-for-profit ministry owned by United Women in Faith. This community consists of United Women in Faith and Global Ministries’ retired missionaries and deaconesses who have served The United Methodist Church as well as retirees from the Asheville and North Carolina area at large. Through the grace of God, all BHH residents and employees are safe. Fallen trees have caused some property damage. Electricity, water, and communication capability have been severely compromised. Supplies, food, and staffing are at low levels.
