April Observances

From CUMC’s Multicultural Committee

Celebrate Diversity Month takes place in April every year. It was initiated in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity of the world around us. It is a time to recognize and understand our differences, be it gender, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, or other factor, while honoring the common essence of humanity. By encouraging us to appreciate our differences and similarities, the month aims to foster a deeper understanding of others, regardless of who they are, what they are, or how they live. That goal is essentially the foundation of our Multicultural Growth effort. Please engage with us in that effort.

April is also Earth Month, with Earth Day on the 22nd, a time to celebrate the beauty of our home in the universe and to take steps to protect it. Earth Day began in the United States in April 1970 and has grown to probably the largest global event of any type (okay, excluding Taylor Swift tours). Earth Day has become such a phenomenon that it’s hard to single out just a few of the approaches people can take to protect and serve the Earth. While a large focus on corporate and governmental efforts has developed, there are still many actions individuals can take: most obvious in the desert, reduce water consumption; limit the use of electricity by unplugging infrequently used devices (phone chargers, small kitchen appliances, etc.); limit the use of plastic; recycle to the extent possible, including clothes, electronics and appliances; avoid “fast fashion”; and much more. Please make a new effort this month to add to the things you already do to preserve our home.
