What's a "Preview Season" --and Why Does It Matter?
When a church decides to start a new worship service or launch a new faith community, it can be tempting to pick a Sunday, choose a time, and hope people show up. But launching too quickly — without the people, planning, or community connections in place — the data reflects is one of the main reasons new worship services struggle or fail. That’s why healthy new worshipping communities always begin with a preview season.
A preview season is a window of time — usually 3 - 6 months — when we gather people for different kinds of worship experiences, community events, and listening sessions to discover what resonates and what doesn’t. It’s one of the rare opportunities in the lifecycle of a church to experiment and learn before settling on something regularly. We might hold pop-up worship services maybe once a month or bi-weekly, test different styles (acoustic, contemporary, Taizé, dialogical, or worship around a meal, etc.), and try different days, times, and locations. Following each preview event, the aim is to listen deeply and gather feedback—particularly from the people we seek to reach—so whatever is launched is shaped by real community needs, not just our assumptions or nostalgia for the past.
This past Monday, Catalina’s Outreach & Worship Team — nine dedicated leaders and I — met with Rev. Rachel Gilmore, the Desert Southwest Annual Conference’s Director of New and Vital Faith Communities. Rachel guided us through our Team's first meeting to help orient our thinking and begin planning the work needed to launch a second successful, sustainable worshipping community for Catalina UMC.
Over the next 3–6 months, your Outreach & Worship Team will be working hard to brainstorm, test, and refine what this new, second worship community could look like. This team will present a plan at the next Church Council meeting (July 21), with hopes to roll out new preview gatherings in late summer, early fall. This is our prime opportunity to reach new people in new ways, share Christ’s love in ways that make sense for Tucson today, and build something sustainable that will bless our neighbors for years to come.
Please pray for this team, for the people we haven’t met yet, and for the “new thing” God is already doing among us. We can’t wait to see what springs up!
